Note: Salt in most canned foods is usually rated in sodium (milligrams). So the actual amount of salt can be calculated by using the following formula.

Lets use a can of diced tomatoes as an example.

1/2 cup serving size with 220 milligrams of sodium per serving.

How much salt does that translate to?

  • Sodium - Na (22.98 Atomic Mass)
  • Chlorine - Cl (35.45 Atomic Mass)

22.98/220 milligrams sodium

35.45/x milligrams chlorine

35.45*220 = 7799 multiply the chlorine atomic mass by the number of milligrams sodium

then divide by the atomic mass number of sodium

7799/22.98 = 339.28

339.28 milligrams chlorine.

Ordinary table salt is composed of a one-to-one atomic ratio of sodium and chloride, so you must add together the milligrams of both elements.

339.28 + 220 = 559 milligrams salt ~ 1/2 gram of salt.

1 teaspoon of salt is 6 grams.
