Chestnuts are wonderful roasted. Roasting them cooks them and brings outchestnuts their flavor. You can either enjoy chestnuts as an appetizer with butter, or peel them and use them for cooking or baking.

It’s very simple to roast chestnuts. First, wash them and score a small x at the top of each chestnut with a small sharp knife. If you don’t score the chestnuts they might explode in the oven.

Place the chestnuts either on a thick layer of coarse salt on a baking sheet, or on some aluminum foil that is slightly wrinkled. Make sure all the chestnuts stand up with the cross facing the top of the oven.

Roast in a 450 degree oven for about 25 minutes. Once they are done, serve aschestnuts is and let everybody peel their own chestnuts with their fingers or a small knife, or peel them yourself if you want to use them for baking or cooking. You can also boil chestnuts in order to cook them.

Tip! Roasted chestnuts are great with lemon and butter, or cooked slightly with red onions and balsamic vinegar.
