Brand & Type: Lodge Logic 7 Quart Dutch Oven with Loop Handles

Price range: medium, around $60

Rating: 8

Description: 7 quart Cast Iron dutch oven.

Pros: cast iron. heat retention.

Cons: pre-seasoned. heavy.

Conclusion: Cast iron is a great material to cook with. We like this kind of dutch oven to use for frying chicken or taking with us on camping trips. This kind of pot will last forever and we use it almost everyday. It is great for soups, stews and keeps food hot for a long time. Alternatively you can put cast iron in the freezer or fridge if you want to keep things cold.

The 7 quart size is quite large. If you have a large family or make large meals for leftovers then this is a great size. We have been using our dutch oven for about 8 years and the seasoning is great. We have used it camping on a fire and even put it in the fire sometimes to cook from all sides.

Lodge has their whole "Logic" series of pre-seasoned cast iron pots and pans and we are not big fans of these pre-seasoned pieces. People may mistake this for a nonstick coating, but it is not at all. Real longterm seasoning can achieve a sort of nonstick character but this is not the same thing as Lodge has accomplished. We are not sure exactly how the longterm use will affect the pre-seasoning but from experience seasoning an ordinary cast iron pan is not difficult.
