When we ordered the tacking strip for our top we went for a front tack strip and a rear tack strip. What we did not realize is that the rear bow has a long wide area to cover, about 3/4 inch wide x 1/2 inch high x ~ 5 feet long. But the pieces that came to us that was supposed to cover the rear bow was not wide enough.

(these are photos of an original rear bow with tacking strip in place, if ours was in this condition we would not have replaced it - we took these photos from a local shop that deals in Mustang parts)

When we removed the old top last year our old tacking material in the rear bow was really gone and there was no way to recover it. But now we did not have anything to fit that area. So we had to get a little creative.

We called around to probably 10 different upholstery shops to see if they had any heavy vinyl material that was similar to the correct material we received for the front bow, but nothing.

We then called a few top shops on the web and they really did not know what we were talking about. And when we gave them our info (1966 Mustang...) they had different sizes of tacking material than we needed.

So we first thought of something we could use at Home Depot, but they really had nothing. So then we thought about using fan belts that we could cut and lay in the well of the rear bow, but that turned out to be a bad idea. So then we thought of wood. You can staple into it easily and it is cheap and it can be made to fit.

We went to get the wood and fit it into the rear bow, but we thought if we first put down a thick layer of silicon it would adhere better and offer some weather resistance.

Now we do not recommend doing this but it worked.

To make sure the wood could not come out we wrapped it in electrical tape. Since we did have a little tacking material left over from the #2 and #3 bows we placed them on their side and wrapped them too.

(this is the final result of our unique rear bow solution)
