When we cleaned up the frame we removed the old tacking strip from the front bow. Getting the new one in was not too difficult. It is about 3/4 inch wide and lays right across the front bow. You staple the top material and the windlace into it. 
When do you install the tacking strip? We installed the front tacking strip after we got the frame situated. First we laid down some spray adhesive and then placed the strip in. We also used clamps to hold the strip in place while we screwed it in. We could not find any information about how the front tack strip was to be secured so we used #6, 1/2 inch screws. They fit perfect and are stainless steel to prevent rust. The came out a little beyond the strip but it did not present a problem since both the top material and the windlace get stapled to the tack strip.
