The Illusionist lives up to its name, providing mystifying special effects that drive the story forward while keeping you and your superstitious inklings close to its theme. The effects are so good that at times I found myself scoffing at their sophistication. This film is supposed to take place during the late 19th century, yet some of the effects would shock even David Copperfield. If anything the production quality for this film looks a little too good.
Composition : 6
The story here is only a little better than average but at times it reminds me of the bumbling modern day "Ocean's Eleven." It tries to spark viewers attention via slick wit and complex plot line when it could have spent more time developing enjoyable characters. Overall, the composition of this film is a little better than passing but it lacks an endearing quality.
Contrast : 4
The Illusionist starts dark and stays dark throughout. This is consistent with the films desire to play with people's perceptions of mysticism and rationality. However, through this the film dug its self into a dark hole that it never fully came out of. Generally I like dark films, but I think this film could have been well served to brighten up the set now and again.
Dynamics : 4
At points I found myself wondering exactly what the Illusionist is getting at with its play on rational and supernatural concepts. I was disappointed when I found out it was all pretty much a tool to make the protagonist look like a really smart guy. This coupled with the film's propensity for visual and thematic darkness puts it solidly below average for dynamics.
Humor : 1
The Illusionist is not a funny movie and it takes itself very seriously.
Intelligence : 6
Here a six is given because of the complex plot and fairly sophisticated thematic ideas. While nothing ever fully delivered it still has an above average level of intelligence. Some people may find it a little difficult to closely follow the plot here.
Production : 8
Everything ends up looking really good in this film. The costumes are as good as the special effects and I really felt like I was in late 19th century Vienna. At times the Cinematography was also very good.
Quality : 6
I felt this movie was a little above average. I come down on it pretty hard at times in this review, but it's still basically a good movie.
