Dynamics
Scale: 1 through 10; does not indicate quality
Description:
Dynamics is a rating system I use for all media, however, it is used differently for music and film.
In music “Dynamics” is a technical description that indicates variation in intensity and or volume. It does not necessarily indicate quality. A score of 1 indicates very few dynamics and 10 a lot of dynamic range. I tend to prefer music that has a high dynamic range, but a score of 10 on dynamics probably indicates excessive dynamics. It is best to have a score that is greater than 5 and less than 10, but different tastes may prefer lower scores.
In film “Dynamics” is an aesthetic term used to express a film's variation in feel. It is distinct from the term “contrast” in that it describes a feel rather than a look. However, a high or low score for “Dynamics” does not indicate quality. A score of 1 indicates very little dynamic feel, 10 is very high.
