My favorite Sylvester Stallone movie of all time is Rocky and in some ways Copland reminds me of that story of a down and outer who finally gets his chance to put it all right for himself. While the whole flow of this film is similar to Rocky's occasionally its reality is even more biting. This is a well above average script with an entertaining story about corruption and conspiracy within a police department.
Contrast : 3
Most of the cinematography in this film is dark. Even midday suburbia comes with a touch of David Lynchian evil.
Dynamics : 2
Throughout this film nothing ever changes. It's basically the story of a middle aged man confronting his past decisions and being unable to reconcile with them. Almost every scene is gritty, dark, and depressing.
Humor : 1
Nothing about Cop Land is funny and it takes itself very seriously.
Intelligence : 5
This was very much your run of the mill movie. While Cop Land wasn't idiotic, it wasn't especially bright either. Ultimately, it comes across to me as another Rocky movie without boxing and a lot of cops, so it doesn't even get points for being original.
Production : 5
Nothing in this film required extraordinary efforts to produce. A score of 5 here only shows that this is dramatic film that didn't require a lot fancy production. It's all actors acting. In the case of Cop Land I think that was a good decision. Stallone's acting was good enough to carry this film without.
Quality : 6
This is a slightly above average film and it's probably Stallone's second greatest performance; it trails the original Rocky. I won't watch it again but it wasn't a complete waste of time either.
