JC Penney has a lovely selection of Mother of the Bride Dresses for all sorts of weddings. The dresses offer affordable fashion, wear-again styles, fit, comfort and fashionable colors from neutrals to classic black. When looking for a special dress remember the time of day and location for example a formal, beach or backyard setting. Also consider hem length and fabric types before commiting to a given style.

And don't forget that adding accessories that make a women sparkle all make a special Mother of the Bride.

When to Wear: ... weddings, parties, special occasions...etc

Price Range: ... low-medium

Fabric: ...polyester, blends, shantung

Styles: ... floor length, skirt set, jacket & shell set, jacket dress, 2 piece, sleeved, pants, jacket...etc

What to Accessorize: ... jewelry - earrings (drop, dome, tear-drop, hoop or dangle), necklace (y, choker), diamonds, pearls, brooch, bracelet (collection or single), rings, shoes - pumps, sandals, slingbacks, platforms, open toes, small or mini purse or clutch, wraps, shawls, jacket, bolero, lingerie and undergarments

Also called: ... formal dress, event dress, special affair dress, semi-formal, informal dress

To decide on a dress that has both a flattering style and a fabulous fit isn't all that easy. You may want something that is easy to wear, but still attractive and fashionable at a reasonable cost. When my mother was looking for a dress she too was looking for a pretty and feminine, yet stylish look - not a frumpy or matronly style, since no one wants to be called old-fashioned. And sometimes what looks good on a hanger doesn't look right in person, so try on several different styles until you find the perfect one. Sometimes a jacket dress offers a nice option to cover flabby arms or maybe it's just because you're cold or you feel it's a little more appropriate for a church ceremony. Just as an older person might feel more comfortable in a covered pantsuit opposed to a dress. I found that JC Penney offers many jacket dresses in both short and long lengths that are age appropriate and very attractive.

One of the key components to looking good is a good fit. So be sure and look in the mirror not once, but twice. I can recall when three-way mirrors weren't so common, but nowadays it's a necessity, especially with all the video, iphones, and cameras all over the place. Nobody wants to be uncouth.

With all the different fabrics, designs, and colors in today's market a stylish, modern woman has her choice of shapes and patterns and colors. Whether you're looking for a trend-setting look or a tailored design of a jacket dress, the look should be orginal for any ceremony or affair from casual to elegant.

Mother of ther Bride Jersey Shimmer & Metallic Gowns at Neiman Marcus

I just love the Neiman Marcus Bridal Shop website - so easy to navigate nevermind absolutely beautiful.  Everything at my fingertips from bridal dresses, mothers, bridesmaids, flower girls, accessories and did I mention honeymoon attire? So practical and convenient. The wonderful selection of cocktail dresses, long dresses, sets and everything else you can imagine. All so gorgeous in quality materials, construction and up to date styles and fashions from a variety of designers. Need I go on? Long sleeves, short sleeves, jacket dresses, sleeveless, v-neck, crewneck, one-shoulder, a-line, sheaths, full skirts -a wonderful array of exquisite dresses longing to be worn by a special mother of the bride! And that's me. I didn't even get to the amazing shades and hues from pale to ebony. I loved browsing the beautiful collection of short and long dresses in luxurious fabrics that would be ideal for any social occasion. And certainly not your mother's dresses from the attic! The contemporary and versatile selection from a variety of designers looked so inviting on the website that I knew I had to visit the nearest store and admire these dresses in person.

Naturally, I fell in love with all of these exquisite high fashions. Shades of champagne to dramatic berry, suits to gowns - what a wonderful line of evening outfits. Long, lean, smart and sophisticated was my first impression. So perfect for any formal occasion and especially for a mother of the bride that wanted a regal but not overpowering design. These classic and timeless styles were not your usual run of the mill, but all equally glamorous for any evening affair.

After many tries I found it quite difficult to narrow my choices for a special and unique look, that would be an ideal color, in a flowing material, a flattering silhouette, fit perfectly and still complement me and the bridal party. Well, I followed my heart and these two were in the finals. I know they're two completely different choices, but I did love them both. One was a classic navy, long sleeved David Meister shimmer gown - that was just gorgeous on and off the hangar. I loved the flattering fit, the long sleeves and the soft jersey fabric.  The other a Badgley Mischka copper metallic, a-line, jersey knit with a right cap sleeve and a gathering left shoulder. So age appropriate, impressive and smart looking. What a tough decision for me. Two beautiful gowns that looked and felt wonderful for any formal occasion in the latest fashion. Either style and color would give me a polished look - which was exactly what I was aiming for.

Yes, I'm still debating but closer to a decision since either dress will create an outfit that is perfect for a charming mother of the bride. Now to my accessories of jewelry, shoes, handbag - nevermind hair & make-up! A mother's work is never done!

Illusion Bodice & Satin Sheath Cocktail Mother of the Bride Dresses for an Afternoon Wedding

Browsing the Nordstrom website I saw several cocktail dresses that would be perfect for an afternoon wedding or social engagement. I think a tea length or short dress rather than a long one was a better choice for my needs. I was thinking of a pale color in maybe a sheath or a-line or even a jacket dress. A dress that was reasonable in price, stylish, comfortable and something I could wear to another function. It couldn't be that hard to find. Since my daughter is getting married soon, I needed a dress that was pretty and feminine, elegant and sophisticated. An all-in-one dress! She's having an afternoon reception in a curved garden setting near a small lake. An area that has an open and airy feeling filled with greenery, architectural interest, pots of flowers everywhere and small tables with crisp white linens. So a simple dress is my first choice as I didn't want to compete among the flora setting. I saw many lovely and charming dresses on the website, and I couldn't wait to see them in person.

The collection of cocktail dresses were so impressive, in every silhouette, size, color, brand and price range one could imagine. All so beautiful - how can I possibly choose just one. The selection included sheaths, a-lines, full skirts, v-necks, scoop and even asymmetrical necklines! The attractive dresses came in soft lovely fabrics, modern styles and smart designs. I was looking for a relaxed and easy going but polished look that would observe the formal ceremony but still conform to the natural setting.

Well, all my hopes of finding the perfect dress came to a wonderful and rewarding ending as I narrowed down my choices to two pretty and graceful cocktail dresses. The first one was from Donna Ricca - a sheath satin with a few ruffles around a v-neck. The dress was stunning in a haze hue that I loved with a slight cap sleeve - that fit my body type perfectly. What could be better? But the Sue Wong Illusion Bodice Dress was so smart and sophisticated with overlays and three-quarter sleeves. I loved the simplicity and elegance of this dress, the sleeves, and that it was comfortable draping my figure nicely and the taupe shade was ideal. The fabrics and construction for these dresses were outstanding.  Although the Sue Wong was a bit pricey - I knew I was worth it on this special day! Yes, I'm going back and forth deciding on the right dress - choosing sandals or pumps to complement this outfit and minimum of jewelry since both dresses really didn't require anything gaudy. As of right now both these flattering dresses would make a beautiful mother of the bride. And that's me!

Tadashi One-Shoulder & JKara Beaded Mother of the Bride Dresses at Lord & Taylor

Yes, one of my favorite stores is Lord & Taylor's and I guess I'm kind of biased since I remember working there as a young girl. I was working Thursday nights and Saturdays and going to college at the same time. I have such great memories of the wonderful atmosphere there, nevermind all the lovely women, who were so kind to me. But that's another story and the reason I keep returning there, especially now since my own daughter is getting married. I'm looking for a unique mother of the bride dress in a shade that is complimentary, a silhouette that's flattering, a fit to die for and a classic design that I could wear again. Am I asking the imposable?

I began my search on the Lord & Taylor website browsing all the gorgeous dresses and gowns, sets and separates, short and long - a-lines, full skirts, sheaths, hem lines, necklines, colors, fabrics and more! I didn't know where to begin- but I did know what I liked and didn't. Some were too short, too low cut, too sexy, too colorful - do you get my meaning? I was leaning for a classic and timeless look - something I could wear to another social affair, such as another wedding or anniversary party but not be considered a member of the wedding party. Anyway, a romantic vision is okay and I wasn't looking to be trendy or outrageous since this is my daughter's day and not mine. On the other hand, I am the hostess and I wanted to look the part - looking, pretty, feminine and graceful. And of course, pictures last a lifetime. Get my meaning?

So, to move on - I found several gorgeous dresses on the website and I couldn't wait to try them on. Hurrying over to the nearest store, I tried on many that fit my criteria. All so beautiful, by many designers, styles, shades, fabrics, sizes and prices that would be perfect for me. In the end, I narrowed down my choices to two that would fit my needs and still be stylish, comfortable and fashionable. I was looking for a long gown or long cocktail dress and I found the ideal dress or dresses, I should say that would work. One was the Tadashi ruched satin one-shoulder in a jade hue and the other was the JKara navy/white beaded jacket and dress set. I really loved them both and more importantly, they both fit like a glove, so it came down to a matter of choice. Either color and style would complement me and the bridal party, so it was preference. In the end, I purchased them both and I'm still deciding - maybe I'll keep both of them - and save one for my son's wedding!

Mother of the Bride Tadashi Taffeta & Lace & Fuzzi Off the Shoulder Gowns

A formal occasion calls for a formal gown and now I'm in this position since my daughter just announced her engagement. So all the preparations have just begun and we're all looking forward to this wonderful wedding day. So let me begin by saying, the reception is going to held at a hotel for an evening affair. So very formal and elegant. And yes I want to look my best among the stately columns, greenery, gazebo and fresh flowers adorning the reception room.

Back to my search for a dress, I wanted to return to a store that I was familiar and comfortable with. So Saks Fifth Avenue has always been a favorite and I did want something a bit upscale. I skimmed their website looking for something that was eye catching, contemporary and elegant. I really didn't see a Wedding Shop but I did notice all the evening and formal dresses and gowns that caught my eye. Some were too revealing, some to trendy and others just to young. However, in my search I did notice several gowns that would be perfect for this occasion.

The first was a Fuzzi pleated off the shoulder gown that was both attractive and flattering. The color blue was a bit bright for me but I did like the comfortable fit with movement as I walked - meaning not so tight as I couldn't move. The soft pleats gave a nice freedom and weight to this dress and the off the shoulder cap sleeves didn't make me feel bare. Also, I loved the strappy sandals that were featured with this gown. So light and airy. The other was a Tadashi whom I had worn before and always loved for the sophistication and style of the designs. The age appropriate fashions are sleek and tailored, which I was originally looking for. The color again was a bit bolder than I hoped for, but certainly doable. This gown also had cap sleeves which was a plus and a v-neck, ruching and a fishtail train. I wasn't quite sure of the train - but I would consider it. But I did love the lace inserts. Naturally I tried on a few of these beautiful dresses to see what was the best for my needs. I wished for a mother of the bride dress that was beautiful, subdued, simple, elegant, feminine and yet expressed my personality to complement the bride and wedding party and also not to compete with the mother of the groom.

The formal attire and finery of this occasion reminded me that the bride is the focus and the mother a hostess that greeted and welcomed her guests. So keeping this in mind I set out to find the perfect dress for a most happy occasion. Strappy sandals and all!
