How Long To Cook Rice In The Microwave

While it's most common to cook rice on the stove top, the microwave presents a good optioncooking rice because it produces good results and it's easy. Different kinds of rice cook at different rates so here is a chart for how long to cook a variety of rice.

How to cook rice in the microwave:

Combine 1 cup of rice with 2 cups of water in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt, mix well and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Microwave the rice on high for 5 to 10 minutes, until it starts to boil. Reduce the microwave heat to medium (50% power) and continue to cook according to the times in the chart. The rice will be just tender. Fluff the rice up with a fork, then cover with plastic wrap again, poke a couple of wholes in the plastic and let sit for about 5 minutes, until completely tender.

Name: tkfuzzkid | Comment: Thanks for this. I was checking on microwave rice cookers on another website, and read a review that said you don't need such a gadget. She gave brief instructions on how to cook rice in the microwave, and that started my info search. This info will round things out nicely. Have some Corning ware that cooks rice great in microwave (the packets with the seasoning). But now I can cook just regular rice too.

Traditional Black Beans and Rice
1 T. olive oil
¾ cup onion, chopped fine
½ cup green pepper, chopped fine
1 cup tomatoes, diced (or use canned)
1 can (15 oz.) Bush’s Seasoned Recipe Black Beans, drain and reserve juice
½ tsp. thyme
1 tsp. garlic salt
3 T. cider vinegar
½ tsp. hot pepper sauce
2 cups cooked rice
Lime wedge or sliced mango (optional)

In large skillet, heat olive oil. Cook onion and green pepper until tender. Stir in tomatoes, beans, thyme, and garlic salt, and cook 3 minutes. Add vinegar, pepper sauce, and reserved juice, and continue to cook 5 minutes. Serve over rice. Garnish with lime wedge or sliced mango (optional).

Name: Dennis Comment: Soak brown rice overnight as you would do beans.
Strain, rinse, then add water or stock of your choice IE. Chicken, vegetable, beef etc!
Nuke for 7 minutes.
Stir and turn dish 90 degrees
Nuke 7 more !
