Brussel Sprouts - one sprout is about 21 grams and has 8 calories
Brussel sprouts look like small leafy heads and they are indeed related to cabbage which they so closely resemble. Brussel sprouts belong to the Brassica family of vegetables.
Brussel sprouts grow on stalks that are approximately 2-4 feet in height. Each stem grow about 20 to 40 brussel sprouts which can be picked by hand or by a mechanical harvester.
These small vegetables contain high levels of vitamin K and vitamin C and they are also quite high in folate, vitamin A, manganese, dietary fiber and potassium.
Brussel sprouts have a very distinctive flavor which some people find slightly bitter. In order to neutralize their flavor, the brussel sprouts can benefit from cooking in a slightly sweet liquid, for example flavored with honey.
