On Monday June 14th the Old World Deli hosted a Science Pub series lecture featuring Melissa Cheyney Ph.D discussing some concepts from her new book Born at Home: The Biological, Cultural and Political Dimensions of Maternity Care in the United States (Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues). The event was sponsored by the Corvallis Downtown Association and OMSI.

The lecture was titled "The Politics and Science of Being Born" and discussed the many complicated issues associated with the current hospital and insurance system in the United States. Much of the lecture dealt with the increasing rate of Caesarean sections as well as the infant mortality rate in the US compared with other developed nations.

There were almost no empty seats and we spoke to one woman who tries to attend all the Science Pub series presented each month in Corvallis. Much of the crowd on hand seemed supportive, and many expecting mothers were in attendance. Based on the questions from the audience and applause many people were familiar with the subject matter and concepts involved.
