Oregon has improved nine spots in the best States to do business as indicated by the CNBC Poll for 2012. In 2011 Oregon was 27th out of the 50 States. This year Oregon is number 18 out of the 50 States. Texas is the big winner as Number one, followed by Utah & Virginia. In 2009 Oregon was tied for 18th with Arizona.
Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber should receive some praise for this improvement along with the Legislature in Salem. Now the challenge for Oregon will be to get into the top 10. This will be a tough task. Oregon will need to improve in multiple areas including shedding the image of not being friendly to business and improve the Oregon State Income tax structure, including the way the "kicker" works. Oregon State Senator Frank Morse has been a champion for improving the way the "Kicker" functions. In the next Legislative session in Salem lawmakers ought to be looking at this issue and anything else that will improve the overall economy in Oregon.
