“Homelessness in Corvallis” presentation to address data and beliefs
June 27th program features League of Women Voters report

Corvallis, OR – The public is invited to a special presentation titled “Homelessness in Corvallis: Exploring the Numbers, Evaluating the Beliefs” on Tuesday, June 27, at 7:00 pm at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. A report by the same name was released in April by the League of Women Voters of Corvallis, and the report’s primary author, Judy Ball, will present the results.

The League undertook a project in 2016 to evaluate two questions related to homelessness:

·       How many people in Corvallis are homeless?
·       Is it true that services for the homeless attract homeless individuals from elsewhere to Corvallis – the “magnet theory”?

At the June 27th program, Judy Ball will provide an overview of the project, including data, characteristics of the homeless population in Corvallis, and the reality behind some common beliefs about homeless people in Corvallis. There will be plenty of time for audience questions.

Karyle Butcher, Chair of the League’s Housing Committee, encourages all who are concerned with homelessness in Corvallis to familiarize themselves with the League report. “You will learn that homelessness in Corvallis is growing, that it includes families, school age children, men and women, and that it threatens many others,” Butcher explains. “Once we understand who and how many we are talking about, we can begin to develop a range of services to alleviate, if not end, homelessness.”

This event is being sponsored by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition’s Housing Action Team, which believes that the findings in this study should be widely available to community members and decision-makers. For further information, contact info@sustainablecorvallis.org or 541-230-1237.
