Corvallis City Council met on Monday evening, August 6th, for an uncharacteristically short 30 minute meeting. In attendance at the meeting were two candidates for City Council Penny York Ward 1 and Paul Woods Ward 7.

The one major piece of business that was voted on was the proposed annexation of the Sather property. The vote 7-1 in favor will put the matter on the November 2012 for voters to decide. Councilor Jeanne Raymond was absent for the vote. Councilor Joel Hirsch voted no.

If the voters decide to move forward with the annexation of the Sather property, about 33 acres, the plan is to build more than 600 additional bedrooms on the site. These bedrooms will house additional students from Oregon State University.

There was a resolution adopted accepting a grant from Benton County Health Department in the amount of $4,760 dollars to enforce underage drinking laws.

In addition Corvallis City Council meetings will again be available to see on cable Channel 21. Funds were found in the city budget to provide for video taping of council meetings. This had been suspended due to budget constraints for more than a year.

Visitor propositions had resident Tom Jensen address city council on the confusion with the definition of parking requirements for new construction. Jensen requested that the city review and make more consistent requirements for parking in new construction. Jensen added that currently there will be more than 140 extra vehicles without parking availability in the area near the Corvallis Senior Center. Councilor Mike Beilstein added that he did not believe there was any public sentiment to change the current parking regulations.

Mayor Manning spoke of the public reception this Wednesday, August 8th, to meet the candidates for the Economic Development Manager position for Corvallis and Benton County. The reception will take place at 5:30 pm at the Sunset Office Building. Mike Beilstein added that on Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm at Starker Arts Park there will be a ceremony honoring those victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm.
