Wednesday, September 23, 2009 was a special day for Staff Sergeant Larry Underwood. He was presented the Bronze Star for heroism during World War ll. The honor although some 65 years late, was long overdue to Sergeant Underwood for his heroic exploits during World War ll. Les Whittle, a tireless worker for all veterans, was instrumental in coordinating the efforts to secure the honor for Underwood. Frank VanCleve from Congressman DeFazio's office worked with Les Whittle in negotiating the mounds of paperwork necessary to make this day possible. Brigadier General Charles L. Yriarte made the presentation to Sergeant Underwood under a cloudless sky on an exceptionally warm late September day in Corvallis.
