Visiting Artists and Lecture Series: Michael Scott Cherney
When:         Back to Calendar  October 1, 2012 @ 6:00 pm
Where:     Lasells Stewart Center
Oregon State University,875 SW 26th St,Corvallis,OR 97331

Artist Michael Cherney will be speaking as part of the Visiting Artist and Scholars Lecture Series hosted by the Department of Art at Oregon State University on Monday, October 1 at the LaSells Stewart Center. A reception will be held at 6:00PM, followed by the lecture at 7:00PM.

Photographer, calligrapher, and book artist, Michael Cherney’s works can be found in the collections of esteemed art institutions around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute and the Princeton University Art Museum among others.

“For both the artist and audience, a work of art offers observation beyond the dense forest brush where most attention is usually fixed,” Cherney says. For him “this detachment is realized by focusing awareness on those moments that reflect the grandeur of all that has come before, yet are at the same time distinct in their representation of the present.” Art “must be raised to the stature of such moments in order to serve as a vehicle for them.”

Michael was born in Queens, New York and now living in Beijing. He studied Chinese history and literature at SUNY at Binghamton and Beijing Language Institute. His recent exhibitions include “Brush and Ink reconsidered: Contemporary Chinese Landscapes” at Harvard University Art Museum (2010), “Contemporary Chinese Art Salon: Arnold Chang and Michael Cherney” at China Institute, New York (2010), and “Outside in: Chinese + American + Contemporary + Art” at Princeton University Art Museum (2009).
