This is was a very fine beer for those that enjoy floral American hops in the tradition of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale but also want some rich malts. Troegs Nugget Nectar excels because it balances the hops and malts into a near perfect American craft beer. This beer succeeds in the subtleties, as the flavor profile is more complex with each sip as a different personalities of the beer emerge. Nugget Nectar poured a medium-amber color with a frothy tan head that was creamy and had great retention. Its aroma was hoppy and floral with just a touch of pine adding a bit of earthiness. My first thoughts were not the malts or the hops as neither seem to dominate in this beer as the flavors blended very well. This is a malty beer with nice caramel and creamy vanilla flavors with just a touch of chocolate as the beer warmed. Yet the malts contrasted and balanced the fruity, sweet and floral hops. Adding another dimension, the hops were also slightly woody yet clean finishing with a tempered bitterness. The malts were smooth and creamy and the hops were especially fruity, with a lot of berry notes, in particular strawberry. A slight bitterness creeps in to mellow the more sugary notes. The body was medium-light with a high amount of carbonation. March 2009
