I was at World Market and saw this. My beer store does not carry this brewer so feeling the need for an IPA I picked this up. It had been a while since I was in a World Market and their beer selection was really nice and the prices were relatively reasonable. This cost $7.99 for a 6-pack and was a very nice American style IPA.
Southern Tier's IPA poured a golden-amber with a very weak head that had no retention.
The aroma was sweet, hoppy and a little bit peppery.
The malt caramel background dominates the flavor profile with an up front dry, chalk like character that gave the beer an earthy edge. Also, the hops were lighter but floral and they did seem to impart a little sweetness. Overall, the flavors were very smooth and this IPA finished with just a good floral hop abrupt bitterness in the back of the mouth. I did find most of the hops were on the nose and not in the body of the bber. There was also some light citrus notes balanced by some piney spice flavors that brighten this up.
The body was lighter with a good amount of carbonation that awakened the hops and helped bring them to the nose.
This was not a revolutionary drink but it certainly hit the spot. I did like the beer better as it warmed and the flavors developed becoming richer and deeper. Also the hops were not especially bitter or in your face and at times I can go for just that.
