I will start off by saying that I found the Sam Adams Scotch Ale more interesting. Actually, the two are very different in execution although they both use Scotch malts. The difference is apparent as soon as I poured this amber beer. I was expecting to get hit by the smokey whisky malt but nothing much except for some toffee. With the Sam I smelt the malt right away. The flavor was hoppy with only a faint whisky flavor. That surprised me as I expected the malts to be the dominant part of the beer. Also, I found there were chocolate and coffee notes, which I would assume, were the malts. Overall, I thought it was a fine beer with good drinkability. I just thought this would be more like Sam with strong scotch flavors and aroma.
