Last week we went to an early dinner at one of our favorite brick oven pizza joints. It was a scorcher of a day as it was in the 90s (degree F) and just hot and humid and swampy. We decided to eat outside to enjoy what remains of the summer. The out door seating was in the shade so that alone cooled things just a bit. But it was still hot. The waiter came over and rattled off their beer specials and what they had on tap. He mentioned something about a seasonal and was like, that is fine. Soon after he came out with this cloudy, unfiltered wheat like like substance as I assumed that would be their seasonal draft. It was hot and I did not care at that point. It turned out this cloudy, sweet aroma ale hit the spot and was just perfect for the environment and meal. I was expecting a wheat (since it looked unfiltered) but got a great traditonal light body summer beer. It hit the spot and really liked this beer from the first sip. I took down the name of the beer from the waiter and it turned out this was Oberon, Bell's Brewery's sumer ale from from Comstock, MI.. So the other day I picked up a six pack as I wanted to verify my initial experience. Tap or bottle it was the same as my first impressions were confirmed. This really is an excellent beer for the summer season or not. It is light, with a sweet ice tea like aroma, mild flavored and little after taste until the very end as the bitterness from the hops kick in. This is one great beer. It is that simple. Oberon wheat tastes a lot like a hoppy I.P.A. except the flavors are mellow, clean with a very sweet fruity aroma. This is very aromatic. A week or so before I started this page on Christonium, I tried some other beers from Bell's and I enjoyed them. But their Oberon was such an unexpected surprise and just perfect for the day and meal. Find this and try it before the summer season is over. You will be rewarded as it is that good.
