Baby Boomers have traditionally been defined as having been born between 1946 and 1964. There is substantially more to the "Baby Boomer" generation than this roughly two decade period. Going by the numbers the years from about 1942 to 1950 began the period of increased births in the United States. Next, the period between 1951-1957 had a marked increase in the number of births, with 1957 having 4 million plus births. From 1958-1965 births in the United States declined each year. This was due to the fact that the World War ll generation was just about finished having children. Secondly after 1960 the "birth control" pill was introduced in the market place. This had a dramatic affect on slowing family growth on into the 1970's. The older "Boomers", those born in the 40's and early 50's grew up in the period of Roosevelt to Eisenhower. Those "Boomers" born in the period 1954-1965 were too young to have experienced Viet Nam or the cultural revolution of the 1960's. Approximately 32 million births occurred between 1945-1953. The period from 1954-1965 had approximately 45 million births recorded in the United States. These numbers are reflective of the cultural differences between the two groups. The 1960's and events such as Draft Protests, Woodstock and Haight-Ashbury were not relevant to those born during the second half of the "boomer" generation.
