June has started off cool. I could go for some warmth, but I know the temperature will climb sooner or later since it always gets warm here. Sweden was not as predictable. But the summers here I adore. Long and warm and dry but not humid. Things are good here in the summer. And this year I can be excited about our little garden. Today I harvested a few of my first radishes. Just three because I don't have too many, but I figured we could savor them later and slice them thinly on our salad. Husband looked at me and said: I don't know anyone else who smiles as brightly as you because of radishes. Those radishes were beautiful for sure.
I also felt joy bringing more seedlings back from the Farmers Market yesterday. Within my numerous bags filled with artichokes, herbs and vegetable seedlings there was also a brown bag containing two small white truffles. The anticipation I feel regarding these truffles is high. I never cooked with truffles before, and I plan to make the most of it. They smell a bit earthy and the girl told me to leave them in the fridge for a few days to fully develop, before using. So whenever I open the fridge, I see that brown bag and I ponder on all the things one could make with truffles. Should we make a truffle night out of it? Or should we slowly enjoy them in butter, in oil, in sauces? I prefer making things last, so I lean towards the latter.
On a different note, I have realized that to sleep off the ground is immensely better than sleeping with the boxspring and mattress on the floor. The perspective change is invigorating. To be off the floor means so much more than I ever would have thought. Tomorrow I will show the bed completely. It's lovely. We're also doing something interesting with the boxspring, which I'll write more about later.
Yesterday I baked homemade chocolate cake. This recipe is one of my favorites: it's the stickiest, easiest chocolate cake you'll ever make. Once I heard we had family coming over, I whipped it up in 10 minutes and put it in the oven. We enjoyed it out in the sun, with whipped cream and small Oregon strawberries which are so sweet and perfectly ripe right now. I covered up our worktable with the red gingham table cloth and it was perfect. Doesn't everything taste better on a red gingham table cloth? I think so. We're also laughing hard watching The Big Bang Theory. That show is so much better than I would have thought. A few characters are more than a little familiar as well which is amusing... It's a fun one and it's going high up on the list I think. I'm also looking forward to catching up on Mad Men soon. I've heard positive things about this season so far. I feel good about the coming week. I have lots of fun things to share.
