Starting To Tile The Kitchen

When thinking about how we wanted the walls in our kitchen, the choice was pretty clear. We both really like the look of subway tile, and wanted a clean, practical design in the kitchen; hence we decided on tiling the whole kitchen with white subway tile, thereby giving it a more industrial look. Some people might have chosen to just tile the backsplash, but we thought it would be neat to go all the way and not limit ourselves to just one small area.

So yesterday, we started the tiling process. If anything, this is something we have been looking forward to because this changes the way things look so dramatically, and it's pretty immediate too.

We used a ceramic tile adhesive that works well on plaster or drywall walls.

Our trusted tile cutter! Once you got the hang on how to use this one, it was pretty easy.

We decided to start tiling att the edge of the ceiling, so it would be even all around the room. Here we are in the process of putting the adhesive on with a trowel.

Putting the first tiles up.

Cleaning off the tiled area with a moist sponge.

We had professional help!

See how nice the tile looks against the cabinets!

So today we're going to continue tiling, hopefully we'll be done with the whole kitchen today, and then tomorrow we can do the grouting.

Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:01 amHi Suzanne, These particular subway tiles we bought had "built in" tile spacers that created 1/16 inch of a gap. They were really easy to use (we bought them at Home Depot) and I think the space between the tile is perfect!
