Putting Cedar Fence Posts Down & Nailing Planks Up

We're moving along with the fence alright! However taking the old one down, and getting all the cement out of the holes has been annoying. In contrast, putting down posts and building a new fence hasn't been nearly as demanding, both in terms of physical effort as well as time spent.

Of course we inlist our trusty helpers (helpers who come energized and ready to work, and only wish for lunch in exchange, not a bad trade if you ask me!)

fence

Using the post hold digger to dig holes. The dirt here is really dense; a more appropriate word would simply be "clay" instead of "dirt."

Once the holes are dug, we need to put the posts down. Here I'm measuring how far up the post goes when in the hole. I'm looking for around 6 feet here (and the posts are doubled at this spot because we're putting a gate here.)

Putting down a post and securing it with gravel isn't too difficult. The most arduous task here is going and getting bucket after bucket of gravel to secure it!

fence

When putting down these posts, we first check for horizontal level, so all the posts roughly come up to the same height.

Then we also check for vertical level to make sure they stand up straight.

And here is a post firmly in the ground with gravel around it.

Making progress...

Next up is securing the bracing 2x4s with hangers.

Here the top row has been attached, and the hangers for the second and third row has also been put in. Only the 2x4s left to put in there.

And once that's done, we finally get to put up boards!

fence

Putting up boards and nailing and screwing them in was pretty fun! And it went so quickly in comparison to all the other parts!

fence

So here we have the first stretch of the fence, ready in the ground. Now we only have the second part, to the right left to do, as well as a gate to build and put on!
