Installing Our New Stainless Steel Countertop

Remember how we cut and measured out the plywood last week to get it fitted for our stainless steel counters? Well, today Darren from our local sheet metal place came by with the new steel piece.

The steel fitted almost perfect, we just had to use a chisel and remove a small amount of wood in one corner to get it to lay absolutely flat.

To get ready to put the plywood and then the steel on top of our current counters, we began by putting on construction adhesive on the old Formica countertop.

Then we put on the plywood.

To ensure extra strength, we also put some screws in.

Well, Joe was here...

Then on top of the plywood we put more construction adhesive on.

We got the stainless steel on, which on the picture is covered by a tape to protect it.

At least the weights are being used for something!

Now we're going to let the weights and the clamps sit overnight. Hopefully tomorrow the glue will have dried properly and we will have a nice, set counter. Then we might put the sink in - of course we still have more sanding and painting to be done too inside, however at least both the counter and sink is made of stainless steel, really easy to clean up!

The counter is anyway really nice. It's made in 20 gauge stainless steel, and has a nice long, smooth edge. We couldn't be happier with it! And for the low price, it ended up being quite the bargain.

Do you just wrap them around and glue them underneath? Now that you've had them for awhile, do you still like them? Do they scratch easily? Is there a resource you used that you want to refer me to so that I stop asking you one gazillion questions :)

Your kitchen is gorgeous! I want to curl up and live on your marble floors :)

Tue Jan 10, 2012 1:40 pmJulie, well stainless steel does seem like a good option for faux wood countertops! At the sheet metal place they made a pretty deep edge, which is tucked in a bit, so it isn't sharp at all. We just put the stainless steel right on top of the plywood and glued the whole piece on. I don't think the counter scratches very easily at all. We love it, haven't had any issues whatsoever. I actually don't know about any resource relating to this, I would recommend you actually check if you have a place nearby that works with sheet metals and maybe they can help you out.
