Filling Box with Dirt & Planting Seeds

Ok, so now that I have my wooden gardening box, I need to fill it with something, right! So off to the gardening store we went and I picked up just a few seed packets. I really wanted to buy 20 different varieties in the store, but I figured since I don't have much gardening space yet - and since buying seeds are so much fun, I should really just start small. And then when we build more boxes or raised beds, then I can get one packet here and one packet there and thereby prolong the fun - a bit like opening one present each day throughout December leading up to Christmas (man, did I love the advent calendar with one present a day my mom put so much effort into each year!

So back to seeds: for my box, I figured I can fit a couple of small rows (and it would be boring to just plant one thing!), so I got arugula, spinach and radishes for the box. I also got cilantro, dill and chive seeds that I'm going to plant in some pots, because I just couldn't help myself buying at least a few more fun ones!

Also, we got dirt. When reading my gardening books, I always got filled with inspiration of the optimal gardening soil one can create (mix five part soil, one part compost, one part bonemeal, one part .... or something like that), but for now, I figured I would just start with organic soil mix.

I might have planted them a bit too close, and after reading the packets a bit more careful, perhaps a bit too deep. But, hopefully this will yeild something. Because wouldn't it be just awesome to go out and grab a few radishes, some arugula and some spinach for our salad? I just hope something comes up! I wish I could speed up the process though... feeling a bit impatient about this!

Name: Maria Comment: Ooh, I like your seed choices! I'm going to try to start growing spinach from seeds too. I got some lettuce starts. Fingers crossed we have fabulous lettuce soon! The radishes and cilantro you're planting make me think of fish tacos! I'm growing some hot peppers, but I wonder if I could grow cabbage too (for shredding as a delicious taco topping). Now I'm hungry!

Sat Apr 28, 2012 12:58 pmI know, wouldn't it be great to have lettuce and spinach growing outside! Fish tacos sound great and cabbage would be fun to grow. I believe it's a rather hardy plant, so great to plant at spring time or later in the fall. when it's not too warm..
