Building Gardening Box #2

So, are we ready for box number two? (here's box #1) I'm really getting into planting my seeds and looking after them each day. Naturally I want more space to grow in! So, we gathered our last scraps of wood and got to making a second one, an improved one I think in terms of looks and design...

We didn't have exactly the same boards to use this time, only 1x3s and a bottom board. So instead of primarily using nails, we drilled holes and used dowels here (which I thought seemed a bit too ambitious when master carpenter husband suggested it, but I must admit it wasn't too bad and it looks really nice too!)

Bang, bang, bang. Some of the wood split a little when drilling into, but that's really not a big deal. After all we're making boxes to hold dirt, not fancy furniture...

We also layed the boards in more of a criss-cross design here for strength primarily. But I also think it looks really nice.

And then we also added little support pieces in the corners which we did nail into. Overall it made for a rather sturdy structure. Oh, and we put little feet on it too, to make sure it will sit off the ground a bit.

I love the way this one came out. A bit cleaner in design I think. I also love how it was basically free since it was made of left-over scrap wood, now aren't those the best projects!

Thu May 03, 2012 2:47 pmWell there is most salad type greens planted in these boxes like spinach, arugula and radishes. So those are to be harvested right away. I'll see if I'll keep the broccoli transplants in here or if I'll replant them later on...
